The Iron Sheik (Alive)

Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri [1943 - Present]

Pro wrestler The Iron Sheik

Born in Tehran, Iran, The Iron Sheik was a notable heel in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) during the 1980s with his trademark moustache, bald head, exotic wrestling boots with curled toes, confrontational style and signature move known as the "Camel Clutch." With the Iranian hostage crisis fresh in everyone's memory, the Iron Sheik was certainly one of the most hated professional wrestlers of the period and, indeed, he seemed to enjoy every minute of his notoriety. In 1983, the Iron Sheik defeated Bob Backlund for the WWF Heavyweight Championship but lost the title just a month later against Hulk Hogan. The Iron Sheik was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.

I've seen this "character" on the Howard Stern cable TV show (on Time Warner Cable) frequently since I subscribed to the pay channel. He also calls in on frequent occasions to the show on Sirius radio. I'm NOT advocating subscriptions. I just want to let people know he still has "shtick", cursing a blue-streak when he's on. He's travels with "Killers of Comedy", a spin-off troupe of comedians and misfits, that are spinoffs of "guests", as well as regulars on the Stern show, that do night club appearances at small East coast venues. Sometimes, you really don't know if he's putting you on, or really going ballistic(as opposed to the regular "theater" of the wrestling world). He's pretty funny in his own charicaturish way, sometimes getting pretty "looped", and getting carried away. All in all, he's still great fun to see, taking potshots at Hulk Hogan and Jesse Ventura.are fritzi

A little "pre-bio" info about the Iron Sheik: he worked as an assistant coach for the 1972 US Olympic team (which turned out two medalists - Dan Gable and the late Chris Taylor). After the Olympics, Sheik began training for pro wrestling under the tutelage of Verne Gagna at Verne's camp near Lake Minnetonka, MN (some of his classmates included Taylor, Ric Flair and, unless I'm mistaken, Bob "Sgt. Slaughter" Remus). He moved to the WWF in late 1978, working under the name "The Great Hussein Arab" (or as JOOOOOOEEEMcHugh used to say, "Ay-Rab"). He left at the end of summer 1979 and worked throughout the southern territories, returning to WWF in 1983, which is about where your bio picks up the story.
